Anne no Nikki (アンネの日記?), also known as The Diary of Anne Frank, is the title of two anime films based on Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl. The first is a TV special produced by Nippon Animation and aired on TV Asahi on September 28, 1979, and the second, a feature film by Madhouse, was directed by Akinori Nagaoka and released August 19, 1995.
The 1979 TV movie, titled Anne no Nikki: Anne Frank Monogatari (or Anne's Diary: The Story of Anne Frank), combines a narrative about Frank's confinement with adaptations of four of her short fantasy stories - Fear, The Wise Dwarf, Henrietta, and The Adventures of Bralee the Bear Cub - which were published after her death as Tales from the Secret Annex. The TV special was directed by Eiji Okabe with screenplay by Ryuzo Nakanishi, character designs by Isamu Kumata, and music by Koichi Sakata.
Nagaoka's film features new character designs by Katsuyuki Kubo and features a score composed by Michael Nyman, including two songs, "If" (which incorporates "Time Lapse" from A Zed & Two Noughts) and "Why," which have become concert works. The former also appeared in an altered form in the film, The Libertine. In both films, the singer is contralto Hilary Summers. "Candlefire" as well as piano-only versions of "If" and Why" appear on Nyman's 2005 release, The Piano Sings.
Of these two anime works, only the Nagaoka film was released with an English language adaptation, via a DVD release in French (as Le Journal d'Anne Frank) with English subtitles.
